York Union of Golf Clubs

IDU Matchday 2 Report

With this match clashing with Pike Hills Captains Day,  Malton & Norton Club Championship and Englands first Euros match, Team Captain Andy Robson had the opportunity to hand out some York Union debuts for the match at West Bradford Golf Club. Unfortunately, there was a last minute withdrawal, so Captain Robson had to make an reluctant appearance. More worthy debuts went to Wayne Pendall (Forest Park), Joe Copley and Chris Neenan (both Fulford)

Nonetheless the match kicked off with a great team spirit and the morning foursome promised much early on. However the local knowledge proved extremely valuable and what leads York held, fizzled out to being 5-1 down at lunch.

Even with the England match showing live on the big screen, the players enthusiastically ventured out to fight back in the afternoon but were met with Bradford players who were bang in form. You would hope that if you were 2 or 3 under par after 9 holes, you would be leading, but not in this match for many of the young York players. For instance, our Amateur and Boys Champion, Thomas Pyman had to shake hands with his opponent, Rob Molloy on the 15th, with his opponent 8 under par!

The few York successes came from George Robson and Ciaran Matthews in the foursomes with a win, George again in the afternoon singles and Matthew Dolling in the singles. A deserved win and a special mention to Matt for playing after his Captains last minute request, finishing his Greenkeeping shift of 5am to 9am and getting to West Bradford for 36 holes!

The support of the President Mike Ward and Vice President Peter Smith was much appreciated, as was West Bradford's catering and their Unions hospitality.

The next match is at Sandburn Hall on Sunday 27th June against East Riding, with supporters most welcome to watch the young "Five Lions" go for their first win of the season.
