Nathan Wilkinson takes Amateur Championship in Thrilling Play-Off

After some lovely Bank Holiday sunshine, a cool, drizzly day at Forest Park GC greeted the field of 40 players from around our Clubs for 36 holes of scratch golf, aiming to be crowned the Amateur Champion for 2022.

The morning round pacesetter was Nathan Wilkinson (Sandburn Hall) with a 1 under 70 , followed by Iain Angus (Forest Park) on par 71, and three tied on 73, Matty Roberts (Fulford) Alistair Smith (Pike Hills) and Paul Winterburn (Heworth)

The afternoon round's scoring had the usual variety of scores returned, but 2 rounds stood out from the rest. One such was Heworth's Callum Robertson who shot 71, an improvement by 20 shots on his morning score. And secondly, Harry Lee (The Oaks) shot a 2 under 69, back 9 of 33, including a hole in one on the 145 yard 14th hole.

Harry's 69 combined with a morning of 74 gave an aggregate total of 143. With Nathan already in the Clubhouse with a 73 to back up his 70, a 3 hole play-off was required to decide the Championship.

Over the 1st, 2nd and 18th holes, Nathan and Harry scored 2 over and 3 over respectively, thereby Nathan Wilkinson was crowned the new Amateur Champion by President Peter Smith in front of all the players and spectators and the long day came to an end.
