Mens IDU Team v Halifax and Huddersfield, Saddleworth GC, Sunday 12th June

Mens Inter District Union League 2022 – Halifax & Huddersfield v York (Saddleworth GC 12/6/22)

The second match of the season sent the York team as far west as possible, into Lancashire in fact  for the match against H&H Union Team at Saddleworth GC hoping to improve on the loss of the season's opener against Leeds Union.

A few injuries and work commitments meant the 12 man team was much changed from the last, with Captain Andy Robson calling on 9 fellow Fulford Members to add to returning players, Jim Batt-Jnr (Heworth) and Dan Blacker (Oaks) and the ever-present Matty Dolling (York). New caps from the Fulford membership were Pet Jones, Ben Pickles and Nick Audsley to add to returning Legend, Jamie Miller and Captain Andy’s regulars, George Robson, Ciaran Matthews, Tom Kelly, Matty Roberts and Rob Hutton.

And there was certainly an improvement, especially in the morning Foursomes when York narrowly missed out in the 6th match to claim 3 wins, so the morning score was 7-5 to H&H with wins from Robson & Matthews over Yorkshire County Players Adam Walker & Dylan Shaw-Radford, Miller & Batt over Saddleworth members Lee & Adam Rowbotham to add to halved match from Blacker & Hutton in match 6 against Harry Mowl and Damon Sykes

The afternoon again was played under a mixture of blazing sun, very heavy winds and the single downpour, but over the hilly and twisting course, the York lads gave the League favourites a run for their money.

With 24 points to play for in the afternoon, York needed 14 for a win and picked up 2 points per match for wins for Robson (v James Skirrow), Jones (v Lee Rowbotham), Dolling (v Habib Khan), Hutton (v Harry Mowl), 1 point per half from Matthews (v Shaw-Radford) and Kelly (Josh Morton). With 7 matches going down the last the predicted result swung both ways a few times down the final stretch. Eventually H&H triumphed in a 3-match swing down the last to win 21-15.

Matchday 3 is on Sunday 26th June with our first Home fixture at President Peter Smith’s course of Easingwold GC where Bradford will be the visitors. Spectators and supporters are most welcome.
