York Team Narrowly Lose Again!

Matchday 3 saw the York team host for the first time this season and as with tradition, it was hosted at the President’s course, Easingwold Golf Club with Bradford Union the opponents. President Peter Smith acted as Starter under a swirling wind and blue skies with the course looking great and ready for another action packed days golf.

Once again, it was another shuffling of Captain Andy Robson’s pack, with this match seeing season debuts for Fulford’s Harry Bramley, Sam Norman and Rob Whiteley and Sandburn’s Eddie Hicks. Returning after injury was The Oaks Tom Pyman and together with foursomes partner Harry Bramley, the day got off to a win for York. The second pair of Jack Boyd and Matt Dolling suffered a heavy defeat, with 3rd pair of Sam Norman and Rob Hutton losing also. With 4th pair of Whiteley and Hicks also losing, much was needed from the last 2 groups. Thankfully regular pairs George Robson and Ciaran Matthews continued there near perfect foursomes record and won 3&1 and fellow Fulford pairing of Nick Dyson & Mark Christie held on down the 18th for a victory meaning the match score at lunch was 6-6.

With 12 singles matches and 24 points to play for in the afternoon, both sides were confident of taking an advantage and securing their first win of the season. After 2 heavy defeats for Dolling and Boyd, the York team played fantastic golf in the middle order and took 7 points from a possible 8 with wins from Pyman, Bramley & Hutton, a half for Norman, defeats then befell Hicks and Whiteley, so much was needed from the strong tail that prevailed in the morning. With Mark Christie dominating his match out last and winning 5&4, it was down to the last 3 matches on the course for Matthews, Robson and Dyson. A run of birdies from Bradford’s Oli Tasker sealed Ciarans defeat, and similarly, Nick came up against young Bradford star, Spencer Datkivicz who birdied the back nine to death. This ended the match in Bradfords favour, but with pride to play for, match 10 of Robson v Andy “Buzz” Busfield went down the 18th. After a very wide tee shot, Busfield found himself getting a very sporting drop from Robson and managed to hit his 2nd over the practise range onto the green and 2 putt a birdie. From the perfect drive, Robson wedged on then 3 putted to hand the win to Bradford, increasing the margin of lead to 15-21. Once again, like matchday 2, not really a score reflective of Yorks golf on the day.

Matchday 4 is on Sunday 7th July at Beverley GC against the always strong East Riding. Hopefully Yorks fortunes will change then?
