Pike Hills and Heworth share Cross Trophy

PIKE Hills and Heworth shared the Cross Trophy following the final rounds of action at York and Fulford.

It is the first time since 1981 that Pike Hills have lifted the trophy, after they made up a three shot deficit, and not since 1966 - when York Railway Institute Pike Hills tied with York - has it been impossible to split two clubs.

Pike Hills made up five strokes over Heworth at York, while their nearest rivals were two better at Fulford.

At York, the course proved welcoming and low scores were present in abundance.

The best was recorded by Steve Manby and Chris Llewellyn, of Aldwark Manor, who blew away everyone else with a superb 57.

Fulford maintained its reputation as a course where you need to work hard to get a good score, and best was a 63 from the Tom George pair – Senior and Junior – from York.

Next were 64s from Bob Mason and Dan Brown (Forest Park) and Mick Hagyard and Adam Reed (Kirkbymoorside).

They took first and second places in Division 2, while the top prize in Division 1 was collected by the incoming York Union President Andy Holmes (Kirkbymoorside), partnered by Guy Stevens.

Their 65 was just one stroke better than Paul and Richard Winterburn (Heworth).

There were four other scores of 66, including one from Jim Batt and Andy Wright ( Heworth) and another from Pike Hills pair Mark Scothern and Graeme Buitcher.

A special mention for Daniel Wilby (The Oaks) who had a hole-in-one at the 5th Hole.
