York Union Junior Section
The York Union Junior Section comprises juniors drawn from the 12 clubs of the York Union and is run and organised by the YU Junior Organiser, Colin Riddell from Fulford GC. The Junior Section has a busy competitive golfing year made up of four York Union Junior Events and seven competitive matches in the Yorkshire Inter District Union (YIDU) junior league.
YIDU. The best junior golfers in the YU are selected to play the other seven golf unions in Yorkshire each year. A team of 12 play off scratch with a morning round of foursomes matchplay followed by an afternoon round of singles matchplay. Competition to get into the team is fierce, with the 2025 team consistently fielding single-figure handicap golfers. The matches are played in a friendly but competitive spirit and are a great way to gain match-play experience. In addition, towards the end of the season, a team of 6 players competes in the Yorkshire IDU Team Championships. This is a gross medal competition with the best 5 scores counting towards the team total. All team selections are made by the Junior Organiser and Junior Team captain.
YU Junior Competitions. The YU organises 4 competitions over the year, which are open to juniors of YU golf clubs providing they fulfil the handicap criteria. The details of all the events can be found in the YU Competition List . Sign up and entry fees for the competitions is also through the YU website. An overview of these competitions is below:
Junior Team Championships (Spring). YU clubs field junior teams of three with two scores to count in a stabelford competition.
Junior Championships (Summer). A gross 36-hole competition and a nett 18-hole competition, both strokeplay. For the first time in 2026 there will also be under 16 and under 14 age categories.
Ted Kendall Trophy (Autumn). Four better ball mixed stableford with teams of two.
YU Junior Coaching. To develop our most promising junior golfers, the YU now provides coaching for juniors in three categories: The junior team squad, an intermediate squad of 12 juniors aged 13-16, and a development squad of 12 juniors aged 8-12. Selection is based on merit and the coaching squads are under regular review. Whilst parents pay the majority of the coaching fees YU makes a significant contribution through sponsorship and utilising entry fees for junior competitions. Coaching is provided through the YU's partnership with Play to Par at Easingwold GC. Any junior interested in selection for the intermediate and development squads should approach their Junior Organiser in the first instance.
