Martin Brown qualifies for Brabazon and IDU team win against Teesside
Another busy week!
I was on duty for two days with England Golf at Clitheroe where the Northern Qualifier for the English Men's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship – (otherwise known as the Brabazon Trophy) was held. A number of York Union golfers were taking part, and congratulations go to Martin Brown of Pike Hills who coped with the rain, hail and strong winds to post a two over par score of 73, which gained him one of the places available to play for the Trophy at Hollinwell Golf Club (Notts) at the end of June. We wish him all the best.
The IDU season got underway at Pike Hills last Sunday with a match against Teesside at Pike Hills. Both teams were missing some senior players,
with captain Russ Chilton again having to pull on his shoes to complete the line-up for York. However, York Union’s strength in depth came to the fore in recording a fine 25-11 win, with the aggregate difference putting them first in the preliminary table, after rivals Bradford could only manage 21 points, with Sheff
ield a further point back on 20.
The size of the margin doesn’t reflect how close some of the games were. One of the six fourso
es matches was halved, with three others all decided on the 18th – fortunately all in m
favour of York. Adrian Lount and Olly Adamson – playing on their own course – appeared to be coasting to an easy win having gone 5 up after seven holes – but they were pulled back and finally picked up the points after halving the last hole to win one up.
The afternoon singles also featured four matches finishing on the last – three in favour of York with one going to Teesside. James Duckett (The Oaks) and Will Pepper (Fulford) both recorded fine 5 & 4 wins, and Oliver Adamson’s (Pike Hills) 6 & 5 was the quickest win of the day. Mattie Heels (Fulford) was called in from the Junior squad to make up the numbers, and showed persistence and future promise winning his match on the last hole.
President Martin Greaves was proud of the way his players performed and hopes that the form will continue to the next match when they face Leeds Union at Sand Moor on 14th June.
On Friday 29th May we have the Junior Team competition at Heworth, followed by The York Union Amateur Championship, and junior Seward Trophy taking place at The Oaks on Sunday 31st May.
