Your Amateur Champion for 2021 is Thomas Pyman
Sunday's Amateur Championship saw a great field of players competing in York Unions flagship Mens scratch strokeplay enjoy glorious weather at Heworth GC. Past President Eddie Travis was on hand to give the warm welcome and started off with first tee shot by Heworth Junior Thomas Jackson, through to the last in the field and lowest handicap of +4, Harry Lee.
Pace of play was perfect to fit in all the players round Heworth's first 11 holes and after the morning rounds, Fulford's Matt Roberts was leading with an excellent 1 under round of 68 with plenty of others tucked in behind him to mount a charge in the afternoon.
At lunchtime, Past President and Heworth member, Keith Orrell was delighted to make a speech and commend young Thomas Jackson on his recent win at Pike Hills in the Crossley Trophy. Thomas collected his Trophy and thanked those present for their support.
As play developed it, mutterings around the Clubhouse knew it was going to be a close run affair. The front nine scores coming in had no clear leader, then news filtered through that Jamie Miller had three birdie 3's on holes 13, 14 and 15, and with Tom Pyman and Harry Lee also playing under par maybe a playoff would be needed.
In the end, the Championship was decided on the 36th hole, the 18th green with a birdie from Tom for a 66 which equals the course-record. This held off Harry into second and Jamie into third.
President Mike Ward was on hand to congratulate Tom, the players and Heworth for a fantastic Championship that was in doubt after the recent rain. However the course played very well and all the players enjoyed their day, if not some of their scores.
This was Tom's second Championship win in a week, after claiming the YU Boys Championship title a week earlier at Scarthingwell. We hope he goes well at Bradford GC this week for the Yorkshire Union Boys Championship and can claim a remarkable hat-trick!
